Fancy URLs For Everyone!

tng | 2006-04-17 19:59

This is an improvement that I've been wanting to make for quite a while. I just installed the pathauto module which means from now on everyone gets fancy URL aliases automatically! Whee! Here's an example:

        http://www.neuralgourmet.com/2006/04/17/amazing_animated_timeline_of_everything

I had the pathauto go back in time and generate aliases for anything that's ever been posted to NG too. Now, if we gave one of your posts its' own URL alias before it should still be reachable via that address. However, it will now have of the new fancy URLs too. Here's an example... When I hosted Carnival of the Godless #37 a couple of weeks ago I gave it this URL, which still works:

        http://www.neuralgourmet.com/cotg37

However, you can also reach it via one of the new URLs:

        http://www.neuralgourmet.com/2006/04/02/carnival_of_the_godless_37

Another advantage of the new fancy URLs is that you can just put a date in the path an you'll see all posts for that day, like this:

        http://www.neuralgourmet.com/2006

will show you all posts for 2006 and:

        http://www.neuralgourmet.com/2006/03

will show you all posts for March of 2006 and:

        http://www.neuralgourmet.com/2006/03/31

will show you all posts for March 31, 2006.

You should all have fancy URLs for your blogs now that include your name in the blog URL.

I'll be tweaking and tuning the system over the next week or so as I get time. I also want to generate URLs for your user paths too, but I need to clean up after the old way of doing it first so that'll take some time yet. All in all though, the new fancy, automatic URL system is in fine working order.

Please let me know if an error is kicked out or something you thought you had access to no longer allows you to access it or gives you a 'Not found' error.
