So I'm feeling a bit under the weather today and a bit braindead too. So I thought we'd go with something not at all serious. Well, in point of fact, it's not even Friday anymore but I'm backdating this to 11:59PM just so I could use 'Frivolous Friday' which is too good of an alliteration to let slip just because it's actually Saturday. Well, it's still Friday on the west coast so I've got my bases covered.
Simple question: What classic rock albums do you have no desire to own (or possibly hear again)?
I think for myself it has to be Frampton Comes Alive. How the hell did this album go gold? It's awful and grates on the ears in a way not quite unlike an industrial sander on the tongue. Sure, there's some good licks in there, and I admit to almost, but not really, liking one or two of the songs but the overall experience is distressing.
Now, how about you?
Despite Frampton being English (he was at school with David Bowie), he was never a huge star in Britain. 'Frampton Comes Alive' only got to number 6 in the charts here, and went gold, but not platinum. I came to most 'classic rock' of the 70s a bit after it came out, but Frampton was someone you'd only just hear about. The small amount of his stuff I've heard didn't sound that special.
Of the groups you'd think I'd like, but have never bothered getting an album of, Yes stand out. They'd fit in with other stuff I have - Genesis, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd - but nothing oftheirs has ever made me think "I want to play that a few more times in my life".
Dems fighting words!
Just kidding. I love a lot of what Yes has done, but they've certainly had their share of mediocre stuff (especially post-90125). My favorite Yes album of all time is most people's most hated Yes album of all time -- Drama. Of course, that was when The Buggles impersonated Yes.
To my list you can add every album produced by The Rolling Stones. I think they have exactly two songs I like and the rest is pure, unadulterated commercial crap IMHO. The Who fare only slightly better in my book.
Now here's where I probably will disappoint many people who have somehow erroneously thought that I possessed at least a partially functioning cortex if not a modicum of good taste. I have every Styx album through Kilroy Was Here (and Caught In The Act Live).
anything by a band named after a place - boston, kansas, america (early chicago is ok) - styx (oh god, styx is the worst!), and rush.
i'd never give up the political stuff, though, stuff like the clash, ccr, and csny. that stuff is timeless. (indeed, i have a blog on the politics of rock music.
Thanks for mentioning your blog. I might not have found it otherwise. I'm not sure where you lie on the whole political scale but you probably know that I run the Carnival of the Liberals blog carnival so if you ever have anything that you think fits in don't hesitate to submit it. Unlike other carnivals we're selective with the current host making the calls on what they feel are the 10 best submissions that bi-week so don't be worried if your post isn't used. It's very selective and what one host dislikes another might. In other words, keep sending things in.
