Funny, I don't recall attending Adams College
In my neverending quest to avoid actually writing, I found this quiz over at Living The Scientific Life. As we all know, it's those high school stereotypes that really define us and really, aren't we all burning to know whether we're nerd, geek or dork?
According to this silly blog quiz I'm a nerd which is interesting because I tend to refer to myself as a geek, leaving the nerd designation for an earlier generation of techies who concentrated primarily on hardware hackery. Which is fine. I'll proudly call myself nerd. I just wonder when I'll be getting my Λ Λ Λ membership kit in the mail.
So how about you? What culturally marginalized high school social clique do you belong to?

a fun poll
"Pure Nerd - 69 % Nerd, 17% Geek, 17% Dork." I had sort of expected that.
StillHungry | 2006-12-14 11:35 | Nerdom
Me too: "Pure Nerd - 69 % Nerd, 17% Geek, 17% Dork." No surprise.

OK I think this settles it
We're pure nerd here. NG needs to apply for official charter status to the Tri-Lambs.
Welcome to NG StillHungry!
StillHungry | 2006-12-14 12:44 | Thanks for the welcome. I'm
Thanks for the welcome. I'm a "refugee" from too many places where B.S. is touted as "truth." So, came across NG and decided to see if this a place where fun and facts are valued over lies and propaganda of one ilk or another. Just dipping a toe in the water. Have appreciated links to "atheist news" which, for me, seem to have disappeared from NG site.

Ah, I see what you mean
I think 99% of NG's original members were refugees from another place.
I'd be interested in hearing/reading more about the humanist group you belong to (linked in your profile). It sounds interesting, although maybe a little too religiony (yes, that's a word I just made up) for my tastes. Not that I see anything wrong with that. I'm just not much of a joiner but I do like learning about how other people balance a naturalistic world view with the human need for spirituality and belonging.
Oh, I'm sorry you missed the atheist news. I ended up disabling the aggregated content because there's a bug in the aggregator module that was causing serious problems for the server NG runs on. Plus I'm thinking of reworking how I use aggregated content on the site (suggestions welcome!). It will return though as soon as the Drupal core developers fix some bugs in aggregator.module.
If you click the 'about' link in the right hand navigation menu you'll see a 'ng news' menu item. Usually what I do with announcements about changes to the site is post a story that lives on the front page for a day or so and then it goes and hides in the ng news section afterwards. So if there's something different about the site you can always check in there for the latest announcements.

Welcome to NG, StillHungry
We're happy to see other like-minded joiners. As Leo (tng) pointed out many of us are refugees from other places where volume, and confirmation bias is king.
StillHungry | 2006-12-15 15:45 | a march
First, I'll reply about HHM. I'm the Atheist Liason~Steward and Director of Publications at HHM. Doesn't mean a heck of a lot yet as the place is just getting off the ground. It's open to all, promotes Humanism and concern for our planet. The basic principles of HHM are The Earth Charter and The Humanist Manifesto II. It's point: to improve conditions for humanity and to care for the Earth. Not much talk of religious stuff there. The focus is Peace and Sharing Ideas. Nice people. Religious b/s isn't allowed. Nor is nasty fighting over ideologies.-----In case you hadn't heard, a "Secular Awareness March" on Washington DC is being plotted, er, talked about. Here's the information, in case anyone's interested:"THE CYDONIA GROUP"The Cydonia Group is a private think tank established to explore new science and technology and support the defense of science and reason."Secular Awareness MarchWe are in the process of working out the details for a massive secular awareness march on Washington D.C., the CNN Center in Atlanta and the CNN Center in New York in 2007. I need to know if there is enough interest for such an event. If there are indeed 30 million Atheists, Humanists, Agnostics, Rationalists, and Free Thinkers, we can surely assemble a mere 1 million to march on the capital and the CNN center. If it worked for the Latino, gay, feminist and African American communities, it can work for us. If you or anyone you know would be interested in marching or designing posters, banners etc., contact: publicaffairs@cydoniagroup.net "Source: http://www.cydoniagroup.net/id16.html(I hope this is readable -- I haven't figured out to format here.)
